Global Digital Filmmaking

Representative, Germany 2004-2007, Ambassador South Africa 2009-present

Productions and public screenings, in eleven hours…

Cinemasports is an independent initiative based in San Francisco that, since 2004, has extended its reach from the US and the UK to include schools and universities across the globe. Alan Taylor brought CS to Germany and Bulgaria in 2005.

My first experience with Cinemasports as event organizer took place in Frankfurt/Main on March 20th 2005, featuring five production teams. Preparatory viewings took place earlier at the Faculty of Art History, J. W. Goethe University of Frankfurt and once films were completed they were beamed  over the Internet to a live London audience as organised by Walter Slater Murch that same evening.

Pan – European Initiative: April 23rd 2005 – Paris, Frankfurt & Sofia…

Over eighty teams across Europe – Frankfurt (22 films) , Paris (12 films), and Sofia (52 films) were then combined on one single day, making their short films based on the same common ingredients, as known at 9 am. Again, an exchange of films across these cities took place for public viewings the next day.

Mainz, November 13th 2005

The third event in Germany for 2005 took place in concert with students of the Filmwissenschaft, the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz. Alan then arranged for their films to be transmitted on the Rhein-Main Cable Network System, Offenerkanal, based in Frankfurt, in 2006. A selection of films from the USA, Moscow and Europe (Frankfurt, Sofia) can be viewed here

Berlin, July 7th 2007

After preliminary warm-up screenings in March (below), the first CS in the German capital took place four months later on July 7th 2007.

Over fifty filmmakers were involved in the production and evening viewing of six films.

In recent years, Cinemasports has expanded its commitment to media literacy with university and schools. As part of my remit as Professor of Film in South Africa I then brought the Cinemasports project to South Africa. The event organizer – at Nelson Mandela Bay, Pretoria, and Cosmo City – was postgrad student and lecturer, Greg du Tertre.
